A Complete Remedy For Shoulder Arthritis In Chennai

Shoulder Arthritis is an inflammatory condition in one or more joints. Inflammation causes pain and stiffness in joints. Arthritis not only affects tendons and muscles but also ligaments and joints. There are various kinds of shoulder arthritis known as Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Post-traumatic arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy and Avascular necrosis.

shoulder arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis: It is also called as a degenerative disease. This condition destroys the smooth covering of the bone. As the cartilages wear, the portion becomes rough and the protective area between the bones starts to decrease. When doing movements, the bones of the joints rub each other that ultimately causes pain.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: In this condition, the multiple joints throughout the body are affected. Naturally, in the human body, the joints are covered with a lining called “Synovium” that lubricates the joints to make the movements easier. RA causes swelling in the linings which in turn causes stiffness and pain in the joints.
  • Post Traumatic arthritis: It develops after an injury such as fracture or shoulder dislocation.
  • Rotator Cuff Tear Arthropathy: Shoulder contains a rotator cuff that connects the shoulder blade to the top of the arm through tendons and muscles. Injuries to the rotator cuff lead to Rotator Cuff Tear Arthropathy.
  • Avascular necrosis: Shoulder AVN is a painful condition which occurs when the supply of blood to the humerus head is disturbed. As the bone cells start dying without the blood supply, the condition eventually leads the destruction of the shoulder joints and arthritis.

Most of the shoulder problems are treated without a surgery. But some conditions need the surgical intervention to avoid deterioration.
  • Administering steroid injection into the joint along with local anesthesia decreases the pain instantly
  • Shoulder replacement surgery is performed to restore the mobility and relieve pain
  • Releasing tight capsule of a frozen shoulder
  • Arthroscopy is a method where lighted scope is used along with tiny surgical instruments to diagnose and repair joint problems through making several small incisions instead of opening the entire joint
  • Orthopedic surgeon may perform arthroscopic surgery to repair rotator cuff injuries, remove loose cartilage or bone and remove the inflamed synovial tissue in the shoulder
  • Conventional surgery (Open surgery) is sometimes performed to repair large tears in the rotator cuff.
After the arthroscopic or conventional surgery, the patient is administered with medicines for injury healing and pain relief. A physiotherapist will teach some exercises in order to strengthen the muscles, improve the movement.

Get insight about Rotator Cuff and Surgery?

What is the rotator cuff?

A rotator cuff is a group of four small muscles in the shoulder area that is responsible for the control, movement, and stability of the shoulder joint in an individual. These include subscapularis, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and teres muscles which are collectively called as the rotator cuff. They are known as rotator cuff because these muscles exhibit rotational motion at the shoulder joint.

What is rotator cuff injury?

Rotator cuff injury is a tearing of the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulders part of the body. A rotator cuff injury can appear in two ways
  • Trauma
  • Repeated microtrauma
Traumatic rotator cuff injury can tear the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder area when lifting a heavyweight or fall on the rough surface. The rotator cuff injury mostly occurs due to repeated microtrauma which can persist over many weeks, months, or years.

Actually, repeated rotator cuff injury will injure the soft tissues present in the shoulder area and develop swelling and bruising. This swelling further develops impingement, squeezing, or catching of the rotator cuff tendons by separating them from the bony hood. This is a painful situation and needs surgery. Knee and Shoulder India provide excellent services for the surgery of rotator cuff injury in Chennai.

What are the symptoms of rotator cuff injury?

Rotator cuff injury generally shows the signs of shoulder pain and weakness in the shoulder area. It also reduces the shoulder functionality. It can be partial or full thickness tears. Partial rotator cuff injury shows mild shoulder pain when lifting the shoulder whereas full rotator cuff injury shows severe shoulder pain and low functionality when lifting the shoulder above. This is a highly painful situation and needs immediate treatment.

How is a rotator cuff injury diagnosed?

A sports doctor or a physiotherapist can diagnose a rotator cuff injury by analyzing an individual clinical history and by performing certain tests.  An ultrasound scan is a perfect method to diagnose the location and size of the rotator cuff injury.  MRI and X-rays also have a diagnostic ability.

What is the advantage of rotator cuff surgery?

Rotator cuff surgery is considered when physiotherapy is not enough to treat partial or full thick tearing in the shoulder area. In the surgery, torn tendons are sewed back together. The surgery is highly effective on fresh tear rather than old tear. The surgery took around 6-8 months to regain full motion, strength, and functionality of the shoulder. Knee and shoulder India has an expert and qualified team of doctors to perform surgery.

Knee and shoulder India in Chennai has a good hold on the knee and shoulder related surgeries.  The clinic has all the modern equipment and facilities for rotator cuff injury surgery.

Don't avoid Ligament Injuries

The LCL (lateral collateral ligament) and MCL (medial collateral ligament) are two of the four ligaments that provide stability to the knee joint with the help of ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and PCL (posterior cruciate ligament). The LCL is situated on the outer side of the knee and MCL is situated on the inner side of the knee. These two ligaments control the side to side stability of the knee joint. The injury in LCL or MCL can resulted in a partial tear, sprain, or full tear which depends on the severity level of the injury.
http://kneeandshoulderindia.com/knee-procedures/lcl-injury-treatment/index.html

LCL and MCL tears and sprains mostly occur from direct effect to the side of the knee. Generally, sports persons are more prone to these kinds of injuries. LCL injuries are result of trauma to the inner side of the knee and MCL injuries are occurred due to impact to the outer side of the knee. LCL injuries are less common then MCL injuries. MCL injuries are mostly happened with the meniscus tears as it is connected to the lateral meniscus. LCL injuries mostly occur with ACL or PCL tears.
Symptoms of LCL and MCL injuries will depend on its severity.
  • A mild swelling near the ligament
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Occurring of a “popping sound”
  • Difficulty in bend knee
The first line treatment for most LCL/MCL injuries is to provide rest to the affected area and apply ice on it. Anti-inflammatory medication also helps in reducing the swelling and pain. Major or severe injuries require manual therapy, massage, laser treatments, ultrasound and physical therapy exercises.  LCL injuries are generally required surgery then MCL injuries. LCL injuries needed rehabilitation after surgery to increase strength and flexibility in the patients. Some cases needed to wear brace to keep knee joint stable and to prevent any kind of damage.
Knee and Shoulder India, Chennai has all the modern equipments and techniques to treat LCL/MCL injuries. The clinic is good in treating LCL/MCL injuries and provides best treatment for Ligament Injuries in Tamilnadu

Shoulder Impingement syndrome

Shoulder impingement syndrome also known as swimmer's shoulder is a common cause for shoulder pain. It occurs when there is an impingement of the tendons of the rotator cuff as they pass through the shoulder joint.

http://kneeandshoulderindia.com/shoulder-procedures/impingement-syndrome-treatment/index.html

Causes and Risk factors of Impingement Syndrome
  • Overhead use of the shoulder joint may cause impingement syndrome. The following are some of causes and risk factors of Impingement syndrome:
  • Partial tear of a rotator cuff tendon
  • Repeated activity using shoulder like tennis, swimming and other overhead sports
  • Joint Abnormality
  • The common symptoms of Impingement syndrome includes:
  • Weakness of the shoulder muscles
  • Pain in the shoulder that extends from the top of the shoulder to the elbow
  • Pain when lying on sore shoulder
  • Pain while using arm
  • Difficulty in reaching up behind the back
  • Muscle pain or weakness when lifting or attempting to reach
  • Sharp pain when trying to reach the back pocket
  • Diagnosis and Treatment of Impingement Syndrome
Impingement Syndrome can be diagnosed by an ultrasound scan which helps to visualize the dynamic impingement and detect associated injuries. An ultrasound can visualize what is happening as the shoulder moves through the impingement zone.
Usually, the doctor may suggest a non surgical treatment such as anti inflammatory drugs or cortisone injections while starting the treatment for Impingement syndrome. If the patient have problem after trying non surgical treatments, the doctor may suggest a surgery. The following are the surgical methods for treating Impingement syndrome:
  • Acromioplasty: Surgery to increase the space between the acromion and the rotator cuff.
  • Resection Arthroplasty: In this procedure if there is a arthritic AC joint, the end of the clavicle will be removed
  • Arthroscopic Procedure: In this procedure the surgeon look in to the joint using an arthroscope and treat the problems inside the joints

Knee Replacement Surgery in Chennai

Knee Replacement Surgery also known as Arthroplasty is a bone surgery that helps to ease the pain caused by severe arthritis and helps you to move more freely.
The Procedure
During the surgery, the orthopedic surgeon replaces the damaged part of the knee with an artificial joint made of metal or plastic. Then the artificial joint is attached to the thigh bone, kneecap and shin with a special material such as acrylic cement.
http://kneeandshoulderindia.com./knee-procedures/total-knee-replacement/index.html

Good candidate for Knee Replacement Surgery
The main reason why people go for Knee Replacement Surgery is Osteoarthritis (the condition occurs when the cushion between the knee and bone joints break down). Knee Replacement Surgery benefits the following conditions also:
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis is a condition when the body's immune system attacks and destroys the lining of the knee.
  • Deformities: People with deformities like bowed legs or "known-knees" often get surgery to restore the position of the knee.
  • Knee Injuries: Broken bone or ligaments around the knee result in arthritis that causes pain and limits movement of the knee.
  • Loss of blood Flow: Doctors will recommend surgery for condition called either osteonecrosis or avascular necrosis (the condition causes when blood stops flowing to the bones).

Different types of Knee Replacement Surgery
The following are the four main types of knee replacement surgery:
  • Total Replacement Surgery: In this replacement surgery the surgeon replaces the surfaces of the thigh bone and shin bone that connects to the knee.
  • Partial Replacement Surgery: This surgery is done when arthritis affects only one side of the knee. For Partial replacement surgery the patient should have strong knee ligaments. It can be performed through a smaller cut than is needed in Total Replacement Surgery.
  • Knee Replacement Cap: This replacement surgery is done only on the surface of the kneecap.
  • Complex( or Revision) Knee Replacement: This procedure is needed if you have very severe arthritis or you have already done knee replacement surgeries.

Dealing with Cuff Tear Injuries

Pain or disruption in free mobility can often be frustrating. Cuff tear is one such orthopaedic condition which hinder with free movement of arms. A rotator cuff is a group of four tendons and muscles that help in the stabilisation of shoulder while helping in rotating and lifting of arms.

http://kneeandshoulderindia.com./shoulder-disorders/rotator-cuff-tears/index.html
Cuff tear injuries that occur in the rotator cuffs are common in sports persons, due to repeated wear and tear. Rotator cuff tear can also occur while lifting heavy things or falling on the side. They can be painful and interfere with our daily activities.

Symptoms of rotator cuff tear
A rotator cuff tear needs to be treated early to restore complete mobility and prevent conditions like frozen shoulder. Some of the signs and symptoms which denote cuff tear are as below: -
  • Discomfort while raising the arms
  • Pain while moving arms in certain ways
  • Weakness of shoulder
  • Popping or clicking while moving the arms
  • Inability to lift weights
Causes of rotator cuff tear
Rotator cuff tear can occur due to poor sync between the shoulder blades and shoulder, poor postures, bone spurs, repetitive stress to shoulders, lack of adequate blood supply, keeping the arms in same position while sleeping and so on.
Diagnosis
Cuff tear can be diagnosed through physical examination of the shoulder or through diagnostic techniques like ultrasound, X-rays or MRI.
Treatment for rotator cuff tear
Moderate cases of rotator cuff tears can be treated with a combination of medications and physical therapy. The medications include anti-inflammatory drugs to control pain and swellings in the shoulder. The physical therapy procedures help in strengthening the shoulder muscles.
In cases where the cuff tear cannot be cured with medications alone, surgeries are done. Arthroscopy is the commonly preferred surgery done for treating cuff tear. The procedure is done by inserting an arthroscope through small incisions created at the site of injury. An arthroscope consists of a tiny tube affixed with a camera and other instruments required for the conduct of the surgery. A minimally invasive procedure, arthroscopy ensures best results with a short recovery period.

Dr Bharani  Kumar Dayanandam is a leading orthopaedic surgeon who provides best shoulder Pain Treatment in Chennai with the help of a dedicated team.
